Last night at The Big Easy, the foursome Raleigh?based band HipSlack ?rocked the hip hop,? the reggae and other rock favorites that kept the mixed Friday night crowd dancing.?? Comprised of Miles Partridge (front man vocalist, guitarist), Daniel Paul (guitarist and vocalist), Maverick Raber (bassist), and Bongo John (drummer), HipSlack never lacked energy and with their medleys of pop songs translated into rock and punk, they proved themselves to be more surprising and charismatic than your average cover band.
Take for example the beginning of their first set, where they turned Steve Miller Band into, yes, Shaggy, before moving into Sublime, Kanye West, Notorious B.I.G., and old school hip hop.? A personal highlight for me was their clever mash up of Low by Flo Rida with Day Tripper by The Beatles.? Miles? took the lead on vocals and raps and his lively stage presence and physicality motivated the audience to get rowdy and keep the party going.? The strong drums and deep basslines encouraged dancing and the guitar riffs and vocals of Daniel further showed their depth of talent as musicians. ??Not limited to only covers, HipSlack also has original songs to add to the mix.
Needless to say, I highly recommend catching HipSlack play for a guaranteed good time; their next show will be in Cary at Train Station Bar and Grille (formerly known as Harrison?s) on December 31, 2012.
